The Smokehouse Creek fire in the Texas Panhandle has exploded into the second-biggest wildfire in U.S. history, covering an area larger than Rhode Island. The fire is burning nearly 1.1 million acres, or 1,600 square miles, and has spread to tens of thousands of acres in Oklahoma, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. The blaze remains only 5% contained, and two people have died, including a woman in her 40s who had gotten out of her truck when the fire "overtook her," officials said. Here's the latest. |

In 2022, Erick Gallun's aorta ruptured, and doctors performed a nine-hour surgery to save his life. Afterward, his care team noted how his physical strength played a key role in his survival. The Oregon psychologist, 52, had spent two years using Supernatural, a virtual reality exercise program he started during the pandemic. The workouts included augmented reality boxing, cardio, stretching and meditation sessions, all while wearing a VR headset. "Two and a half years of doing Supernatural very regularly didn't just give me the ability to be strong," he told TODAY.com. "It gave me the ability to see myself as somebody who was athletic, which I wasn't before." Continue reading. |

A little pick-me-up before you go. |
A Minnesota dad was stumped when his 5-year-old son wanted something called "People Chicken" for dinner. In a funny TikTok video, Dillion Michael White described how his son, Mason, drew a stick figure with a large head that represented "People Chicken." The confusion continued for another 20 minutes before White searched for chicken places on his phone and showed Mason the photos. Aha! The cartoon visage of Kentucky Fried Chicken's Colonel Sanders and his bowtie popped up. "I don't know why, in all the years I've been living, I never thought of the fact that this man ... might actually be a very large head on a stick figure body," White told us. Watch the video here. |
