More than 100,000 people in Moore County could be without power and heat for days with temperatures in the low 30s after at least one gunman opened fire on two Duke Energy power substations on Saturday night, police said. Officials with the FBI's office in Charlotte said the attacks were "willful damage" and that it was possible the attacks were connected to a LGBTQ+ drag show in the city of Southern Pines on Saturday. The Moore County sheriff said the substations were "targeted." A Duke Energy official said the power could be out until Thursday, and authorities asked travelers not to visit Moore County at night with traffic and street lights out. |

Count us among those Americans who didn't know this: A new survey has found all alcoholic beverages increase the risk of many types of cancer. The survey of nearly 4,000 adults found that less than a third knew that drinking alcohol, including wine, was a risk factor for cancer. And 10% of the respondents thought drinking wine actually prevented cancer. (It doesn't?!) A 2021 study found that alcohol consumption accounted for 75,199 cancer cases and 18,947 cancer deaths annually in the U.S, coinciding with a rise in drinking, particularly among women 30 to 45. "It's a women's health issue, and we need to do a better job talking about the fact that there is no health benefit, particularly around cardiovascular disease and cancer," one professor told us. "SNL" host Keke Palmer set the record straight about all the pregnancy rumors swirling around her: They're all true! The actor and television star revealed she was pregnant by dramatically popping open her trench coat and showing off her baby bump during her opening monologue. "I gotta say, it's bad enough when people spread rumors about you, but it's even worse when they're correct," she joked. This will be the first child for Palmer, 29, who did not confirm any other details about the pregnancy. |

Sal Gomez thought when he felt pain in his right testicle and lower back that he had just pulled a muscle while working out. He performed a self-examination on his testicle and didn't feel any lumps, but the pain was still there after two weeks, so he scheduled an appointment with his doctor. The third-year medical student had stage 2 testicular cancer and needed chemotherapy after having his testicle removed. Gomez is now looking to help other men by sharing his journey. "I had to tell everybody that I'm going to lose my testicle, and on top of that I think the biggest thing is ... men don't want to go to the doctor," he told us. "If we don't talk about it, how can we find these really dangerous things?" Read more here. |

The holiday season is all about indulging in some sweet treats, and this recipe by our own Joy Bauer combines two of our favorites: cheesecake and brownies. An important tip for making Joy's snackable cheesecake brownie bites is to let the cream cheese soften to avoid small clumps in your dip. You also can substitute a guilty pleasure like chocolate peanut butter spread for the cream cheese, or go a healthier route with vanilla Greek yogurt in the center. Get the recipe |

Great hospitality comes in all forms. Melissa Keomoungkhoun and her husband, Victor Montiel, who are deaf, reached out to Dallas hotspot Tatsu ahead of time to clear up any communication issues. Knowing that it's an omakase menu in which the chef offers an explanation of each dish, they wanted to give the restaurant a heads up. When they arrived, they were surprised to be greeted in American Sign Language by the whole staff. The chef and co-owner, Tatsuya Sekiguchi, also learned how to sign their tasting menu just for the occasion. "We looked silly being in awe with smiles on our faces," Melissa told us via email. Sekiguchi said he wanted to make sure all his patrons feel welcome. "My belief is every day and everyone is special," he told us. |
