If you're still struggling to recover your sense of taste and smell after getting Covid, you are not alone. About 5% of people with confirmed cases of Covid-19, which is about 4.5 million people in the U.S., may have suffered a long-lasting loss of taste or smell, according to analysis published yesterday in the peer-reviewed medical journal of the British Medical Association. It's still not known why some people don't recover, but the study's authors hope their findings can lead to research into new therapies. |

The Department of Justice is investigating the actions of former President Donald Trump leading up to the Jan. 6 riot as part of the department's probe into efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The inquiry is not a criminal investigation of Trump himself, an administration official told NBC News. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in an interview on NBC Nightly News that "anyone" could be held accountable for attempting to overturn or interfere with the 2020 election. |

A couple living quietly in Hawaii for decades were actually Russian spies who assumed the identities of babies who died in Texas in the 1980s, U.S. federal agents allege in court documents, according to NBC Hawaii affiliate KHNL. Walter Glenn Primrose and Gwynn Darle Morrison have been charged with identity theft, conspiracy to commit crimes against the U.S., and more. Photos included in court records show the couple wearing uniforms that the U.S. government said belonged to the KGB. The attorney for Morrison said her client had "nothing to do with Russia" and said she tried on a uniform at a friend's house for fun in the picture. Neither Primrose nor Morrison have been charged with espionage-related crimes. |

Atlantic puffins are not only adorable seabirds that make you smile just looking at them, they're also an uplifting comeback story. The population of the colorful birds appears to be thriving in a group of protected islands off the coast of Maine despite harmful changes to the climate. TODAY's Kerry Sanders visited one of the islands to find out the why the baby pufflings are well fed and growing this year. "It's actually really promising and kind of reassuring," an official with Audubon's Puffin Project told him. |
