There's a myth that a glass of wine before bed will help you sleep better. But is that just hype? Yes, alcohol does put you to sleep because it's a sedative, said Rebecca Robbins, Ph.D., an instructor at Harvard Medical School and sleep scientist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, adding that one glass before bed is probably not too much of a problem. But, Robbins adds, "much more than that ... it will ruin the quality of your sleep. It causes you to wake up multiple times and suppress some of the most important stages of sleep." It turns out that the idea that alcohol is good for sleep is just a myth. What other common sleep myths can you let go of? Find out. |
