The spread of monkeypox is declared a global health emergency, and a teen is "fighting his little heart out" against a rare infection caused by an organism found in warm freshwater. Plus, how to know if those five-star reviews of doctors online are real or fake. |

The World Health Organization has declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern, its highest designation for serious global disease outbreaks. The world has more than 16,000 cases, including more than 2,500 in the U.S. since May, according to the CDC. Monkeypox is spread via close, direct contact and while rarely fatal, it can be very painful and cause lesions and sores. Cases have been found in all but five states, and two cases were recently confirmed in children, according to the CDC. The U.S. had distributed 156,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine to states as of last week and ramped up testing capacity to 70,000 tests per week to combat the spread. |

Florida teen Caleb Ziegelbauer, 13, has been hospitalized due to a rare case of "brain-eating amoeba" known as Naegleria fowleri, which is found in warm bodies of freshwater and enters the body through the nose. Ziegelbauer's symptoms began about a week after his family took a trip to a beach in Port Charlotte, Florida. His aunt said her nephew is breathing on his own, and another aunt said he is "fighting his little heart out" nearly three weeks after he first became ill. |

Kim Seaman, 53, and Keighan McGoff, 26, shared what daily life is like with long Covid, which disabled Seaman to the point where she needed a wheelchair to attend her son's graduation and can no longer drive. They also described intense fatigue, brain fog, sensitivity to light and a dizziness McGoff said made her sway like she was drunk just walking across the kitchen. A CDC study of 300,000 patients found that one in five of those aged 18 to 64, and one in four of those aged 65 and older, had persistence of symptoms associated with long Covid. "My life looks completely unrecognizable to me," Seaman told us. |
