Heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the U.S. and it doesn't discriminate: men, women and every ethnicity and race are affected. Plus, it's sneaky – many people who have had heart attacks say they were caught completely by surprise or hadn't noticed certain symptoms. But, subtle clues can tip us off to heart problems. If you are feeling noticeably more tired or out of breath than usual, experiencing new pains in the chest, arms or elsewhere or even if you're having unexplained stomach upset, your heart might actually be the problem.
One doctor told TODAY that many people who have had heart attacks probably had signs: "A substantial minority of patients will have some symptoms that, had they paid attention to them or sought an outpatient evaluation, they might have had a different outcome."
