Five people were bitten by sharks or what officials believe to be sharks in separate incidents throughout New York this week. A 15-year-old boy surfing in Fire Island was bitten on his heel and toes on Monday, while a girl the same age was attacked by an unknown animal in Babylon, although drones indicated images of sharks in the water. On Tuesday, a man in Quogue was bitten on his knee by what police called "a larger marine animal," and another swimmer in Fire Island was bitten on his hand by a shark. A few hours later, a woman in Fire Island was also believed to be bitten. Shark sightings have also occurred in Florida this week, although no attacks were reported. Experts recommend wearing bright clothing and remaining calm to avoid sharks while in the water. Here's the latest. |

Joey Chestnut emerged as the "weiner" of the annual Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4 in Coney Island, New York, scarfing down 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes. It's his 16th title in 17 years and came after pouring rain and lightning delayed the contest for two hours. Miki Sudo took home the title in the women's field by chowing down 39.5 dogs in 10 minutes. "I still have hot dog in my teeth," Sudo told ESPN after her win, her ninth career victory at the famed contest. See more photos and video here. |

Glenn Moog, of Columbus, Ohio, spotted a small bump on his neck after having sinus problems. Five months later, he went to his doctor, only to learn he had stage 4 cancer caused by HPV, the human papilloma virus, on the base of his tongue. Moog became cancer free following treatment, but his case highlights how doctors have seen an increase among head and neck cancers caused by HPV. The jump can be credited to a rise in cancer among people between the ages of 40 and 65 who were too old to be vaccinated against HPV, Dr. Matthew Old of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center tells us. Here's what to know about HPV and head and neck cancers. |

If you got a little too much sun over the holiday weekend, we've got a few helpful tips from dermatologists about how to heal a sunburn fast and combat irritating peeling. To reduce inflammation, take a pain reliever like ibuprofen or Tylenol, or try a cool bath or a cold compress. Also, make sure you drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. You also want to avoid oily topical creams like Vaseline or Aquaphor because those can trap heat in your skin and make it worse. Opt for aloe vera instead. For more tips on how to treat a sunburn, go here. |
