This is the time of year when you might decide to break out your trusty space heater for immediate warmth.
But using it incorrectly could result in a home fire – it's estimated there are about 1,700 fires per year because of space heaters, resulting in about 80 deaths and 160 injuries annually.
One safety tip is to plug the space heater directly into the wall. Space heaters are small, but draw a lot of electricity, which some extension cords and power strips can't handle. That could cause a fire, so it's best to keep the heater plugged directly into a wall outlet.
