When it comes to happiness, genes matter a lot, but your day-to-day choices matter even more, says Tal Ben-Shahar, author of "Short Cuts to Happiness: Life-Changing Lessons from My Barber."

One simple way to boost happiness is to slow down and take a break. Not all day, not every day, but once in a while to savor life, express gratitude and notice the beauty going on around you. "Einstein once said there are two ways to live life: One is as if nothing is a miracle; the other is as if everything is a miracle," Ben-Shahar said. "We need time to savor that miracle."
