A survey of 6,600 adults conducted by the nonprofit Survey Center on American Life found that nearly a quarter of U.S. adults with a high school diploma or lower education level said they had no close friends. Just 10% of those with college degrees said the same. "Our social fabric seems to have two layers now," the center's director told NBC News. Barely a year after losing part of her left leg in a shark attack while snorkeling, former Yale swimmer Ali Truwit will compete in this week's Paralympic Games in Paris. Truwit initially returned to the water to aid in her recovery, but her ambition grew after she medaled at the U.S. Paralympic Swimming Championships in December. "I'm unique in that I was attacked by a shark, but I'm not unique in that we all go through hardship and trauma and tough times in life, and we all have the capacity to rise back up," Truwit said on TODAY.
