The new year is often a time to focus on new fitness goals — but what if you used to have an exercise habit you loved and somehow it got away from you? The good news is you can get it back. The first step is to think about what you loved about that favorite fitness activity. Did it give you more energy? Make you feel stronger? Allow you to spend time with your family in a fun way? Pinpoint what you miss about it and how it made you feel. Then, think about how often you did that activity and commit to doing it a quarter of the amount you used to. For example, if you used to play softball weekly, start out playing monthly. The goal is to build the habit back without putting a lot of pressure on yourself. And once you do it the first few times, you'll probably want to do it more often! Most of us fall in and out of healthy habits. Sometimes, that "lapse" you're beating yourself up over is really rooted in how your behavior changes with the seasons — just like the rest of nature. Maybe this winter, you play less softball but spend more time walking. Your habits are evolving and changing all the time. |
