Change your breath and you can change your emotions. It works by altering the signals that go to the brain, said Dr. Patricia Gerbarg, a psychiatrist and coauthor of "The Healing Power of the Breath."
One basic technique, called coherent breathing, slows the number of breaths you take to five per minute. It's easier to achieve that goal by using any breath pacing app that will give you cues about when to breathe in and out. The results are "very powerful," Gerbarg said.
