It was a year of big announcements, milestone birthdays, Olympic fun and a throwback Halloween celebration for the TODAY family. Here are some of the moments we won't forget.
It was a joyous day for the TODAY family in November when NBC News announced Craig Melvin will join Savannah Guthrie as co-anchor of TODAY, starting on Jan. 13, 2025. Craig will take over for Hoda Kotb, who made the emotional announcement in September that she is leaving TODAY after 17 years but will remain in the NBC family. Craig has been with NBC News for nearly 14 years. "This is one of the most popular decisions NBC News has ever made," Savannah told Craig on TODAY.
What, like putting on a showstopping Halloween extravaganza is hard? This year's TODAY celebration was another classic. A "VHS Rewind" theme meant a journey back to the hit movies of the '80s, '90s and early 2000s that had everyone at the video store clamoring for a copy. Savannah Guthrie as Elle Woods, Peter Alexander as Mrs. Doubtfire, Al Roker as Beetlejuice, special guest Luke Wilson — this year had it all. Relive all the fun moments.
There were some big birthdays in the TODAY family this year, including a milestone for Al Roker. He celebrated turning 70 with some words of wisdom from a fellow 70-year-old who knows about living your best life at any age. Oprah Winfrey and Al sat down at his house for a chat about aging that they shared with TODAY fans. "There's a sense of urgency for me about living well, living as strongly as I can," she said.
With Hoda and Savannah in their corner, there was no way Team USA was going to be denied Olympic gold in women's gymnastics this summer. If Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles and Co. were having a big moment in Paris, you can bet the TODAY co-anchors were right there cheering them on. Lee and Chiles were so used to hearing them in the stands they could even do a spot-on impression of it. "We want you to know that we've got your back," Hoda told them. U-S-A! U-S-A!
Hoda's birthday celebration on Rockefeller Plaza in August was a moment she later called "the top of the wave" because it was so special to her. She shared sweet moments with daughters Haley and Hope, enjoyed special performances from Little Big Town and Sugarland, reunited with families she has impacted and much more. Here's a look back on all the laughs and tears.
