At 14 years old, Dr. James Harris was failing his high school classes and stealing cars while growing up in what he called a crack den in Fresno, California. He became a father at just 15 and was working at a fast food restaurant when a school counselor saw potential in him. Three decades later, he is a general surgeon and the chair of surgery at Maryland's Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center. “There are so many kids like me who just didn’t know,” he tells TODAY.com. “And they just need someone to point them in the right direction.”
