An E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce spread across 15 states in November, resulting in one death and sickening at least 88 other people, including a 9-year-old boy in Indiana who nearly died of kidney failure. The Food and Drug Administration indicated in February that it had closed an investigation without publicly detailing what happened and which companies were responsible for the contaminated lettuce. The FDA denied that its response to the outbreak marked any shift in policy, while food safety advocates argue that disclosing such information is still critical to ensure people will dispose of contaminated food. |
