| Today's workout is an indoor walk
Join the 31-day indoor walking challenge Walking can ahelp you develop lean muscle, says Cedric Bryant, Ph.D., the president and chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise. While 10,000 steps is often touted as the magical number to walk, that's not the case for everyone. Bryant recommends walking 45 minutes to an hour, five or six days a week. And you can break up that time into smaller walking sessions if that helps you to fit in the steps. But you can't walk off a bad diet. So does walking for weight loss really work? |

A 71-year-old woman reversed menopause weight gain and lost 50 lbs. Now she can do a 3-minute plank |
Gail Plewacki, 71, was one of those people who never had to worry about her weight. Then menopause hit. "Menopause knocked me off my feet. I had hot flashes and night sweats. I didn't sleep well. I wasn't as active, and my hormones were changing," she tells TODAY.com. Over several years, she gained 50 pounds, but the change didn't register with her until an annual physical three years ago. "My blood pressure was off the charts. The tech was so concerned, they checked my blood pressure on and off for an hour and a half. When I saw my doctor, he said, 'We are putting you on blood pressure medication today,'" she says. Her cholesterol and blood-sugar levels were also high, and she had a heart murmur for the first time in her life. She overhauled her health routine and lost 50 pounds in less than a year. Here's how she did it. | |
