The aftermath from Hurricane Milton continues, with at least 15 people confirmed dead in Florida, including five who died from tornadoes that tore through St. Lucie County. The hurricane poured so much rain in the Tampa Bay region that it qualified as a 1-in-1,000-year rainfall event. A total of 18.31 inches of rain hit St. Petersburg, according to data from the National Weather Service, and there was a one-hour period when 5.09 inches of rain slammed the city, an amount believed to have 0.1% chance of happening in any given year. An apparent elevator malfunction trapped nearly two dozen tourists 1,000 feet below the surface at a defunct Colorado gold mine Thursday, authorities said. One person died, while 23 others, including at least two children, were rescued after spending about six hours at the bottom of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, a tourist attraction near Cripple Creek. An investigation was underway, but officials believe part of the group got stuck in an elevator that failed halfway down the shaft. Read more.

They have hiked up mountains and ridden on horseback to provide "wellness checks" for pregnant women and babies who may have been stranded or unable to contact their regular doctors.
