President Biden is expected to sign an executive action today that would temporarily shut down the U.S.-Mexico border when daily migrant crossings exceed 2,500, three people familiar with the discussions told NBC News. The border would reopen when the number falls below 1,500. Daily crossings at the southern border are currently averaging more than 4,000, according to Department of Homeland Security officials, which suggests a shutdown could go into effect immediately.
