On her new album, Taylor Swift's lyric "I was a functioning alcoholic" in the song "Fortnight" has put a spotlight on the term. Informally, it means a person who drinks heavily but "they can hold a job, they can have friends," Dr. Lewis Nelson of the American Society of Addiction Medicine told us. The same guy who's slicing meats at a local Walmart deli counter in North Carolina is hoping to get his chance to chop up the competition at the Paris Olympics this summer. Dylan Beard is a hurdler trying to make Team USA at the Olympic trials in June, but since he's unsponsored, he's working to support himself while training. "Dylan's work ethic is next level,'' his manager at Walmart told TODAY. "He goes above and beyond, just like he does on the track." Read more about his journey here. Correction: An item in Friday's newsletter incorrectly referred to Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri, a woman, as "he." |
