The entire police force in Goodhue, Minnesota, resigned recently because of issues with pay, the town's mayor announced at a city council meeting. Police Chief Josh Smith submitted his resignation last week, and then a full-time officer and five part-time employees in the small city in southeastern Minnesota quit days later. Smith said at a meeting last month that low pay was an issue. "Trying to hire at $22 an hour, you're never going to see another person again walk through those doors. That's it," Smith said. Mayor Ellen Anderson Buck is now trying to secure police coverage for the city of around 1,000 people because she said the current department will only be on duty until Aug. 24. She said the police department's resigning "is not unusual — it does happen." Read more here. |

The Tuohy family responded to a petition filed by retired NFL player Michael Oher by calling it a "shakedown effort" and saying Oher attempted to get $15 million from them in the past. Oher, 37, whose life story was depicted in the 2009 movie "The Blind Side," claimed in a court petition that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy never legally adopted him and made millions off his story. "The idea that the Tuohys have ever sought to profit off Mr. Oher is not only offensive, it is transparently ridiculous," an attorney for the Tuohys said, adding that the family was already wealthy and didn't need money from the book or the movie. "His response was to threaten them, including saying that he would plant a negative story about them in the press unless they paid him $15 million." Read more here. |

Throughout her childhood, NBC Bay Area reporter Emma Goss was ridiculed for her voice, which (as she put it) sounded like "Fran Drescher's on 'The Nanny.'" Things only got worse as she tried to carve out a career as a TV reporter. In an essay for TODAY.com, Goss shared how she tried hours of vocal lessons after harsh criticism from her bosses about the the way she talked. The Bay Area native ultimately decided to get surgery on her larynx to correct an abnormality that caused her nasally voice. "I worried that by altering the movement of my vocal folds, I was sacrificing a part of my identity," she wrote. "I questioned whether going through with it was giving into industry pressure, or acquiescing to bullies." Read her story here. |

A little pick-me-up before you go. |
As Matt Damon reminds George Clooney in "Ocean's Eleven," you lose focus in this game for one second and somebody gets hurt. Luckily in this instance, it was just the carpet that paid the price when a dad wrapped up in his phone failed to notice his baby daughter swiping his iced coffee off the table. Home security footage shared on TikTok by mom Kaylie Burchardt captured the funny scene when her 8-month-old daughter Harlow rolled into the room in her baby walker, snatched up her dad's coffee and tried to take a sip. Colby Burchardt doesn't even look up from his phone until Harlow does what babies do best: dump stuff all over the place. The coffee splatters on the carpet, which finally pulls Colby from his trance to leap into action. "We were crying laughing for 20 minutes about how sneaky she looked," Kaylie said. See the moment here. |
