Three survivors of the Maui wildfires that killed more than 100 people told NBC News that the main escape route out of town was partly blocked by Hawaiian Electric trucks clearing downed lines and replacing broken power poles. "Instead of waiting for everybody to get out, they were blocking the only way out with their big trucks," one resident said. Hawaiian Electric said it would look into whether its trucks caused the highway to be shut down. The utility also faces a lawsuit filed yesterday alleging that it set the stage for the deadliest wildfire in modern American history through years of inaction and negligence. President Joe Biden is scheduled to travel to the site of the destruction on Monday as the search continues for the missing. Here's the latest. |

Britney Spears and husband Sam Asghari are officially separated after being married for just over a year, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to NBC News. "They're separated and it's best for Britney," the source said. A second source confirmed to NBC News that Asghari, 29, has moved out of their home and filed for divorce, just over a year after the couple tied the knot in June 2022. Spears, 41, met Asghari in 2016 when the Iranian American actor-model played her love interest in the music video for her song "Slumber Party." She announced in April 2022 that they were expecting their first child together, but then shared a month later that they suffered a pregnancy loss. Asghari is Spears' third husband. Read more here. |

In an essay for TODAY.com, Eileen Vorbach Collins shared her emotional memories of her daughter being bullied at a summer camp where Collins was working as a nurse. A group of girls found a journal written by her daughter Lydia, who was 12 at the time, and openly mocked her poetry and shrieked at passages detailing Lydia's affection for a girl at her school. The girls then avoided being near her at camp activities and called her names, but Lydia asked her mother not to step in. "I'm still, after all these years, appalled at myself for not bringing the problem to the camp's administrators," Collins writes. Lydia has since died by suicide. "I will never forget the hurt she felt at being ostracized at that camp. I doubt she ever forgot it either. I wish I could tell her how sorry I am." Read the full essay here. |
