Fans and fellow music luminaries paid tribute to legendary singer Tina Turner, who died at 83 yesterday at her home in Switzerland after a long illness. The eight-time Grammy winner rose to fame in the 1960s and endured an abusive marriage to former husband Ike Turner to become a global superstar in the 1980s with songs like "The Best" and "What's Love Got To Do With It." Artists from Mick Jagger to Mariah Carey paid tribute to Turner, calling her "an inspiration to women everywhere." The "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" was a mother of four and had been open about health issues she faced in recent years, including a stroke, intestinal cancer, high blood pressure and kidney failure. In 2021, she summarized her life in three words in an interview with TODAY.com. "Hope. Resilience. Victory." Read more here. |

The risks are growing that the U.S. could run out of money to pay its bills by as early as next week, with congressional leaders still in a stalemate over raising the nation's debt ceiling. The debt ceiling refers to a law that caps the total amount of federal debt allowed to be outstanding. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the U.S. could run out of money to meet all its obligations as soon as June 1. So what happens if that comes to pass? If bondholders of U.S. treasuries don't get paid, it could result in a downgrade of the U.S. credit rating and drive up interest rates for anyone looking to borrow money for a home or a car, economists say. It could also make it harder for businesses to borrow money for things like expansions or payroll. In addition, there could be delays in government payments to Social Security, Medicare and veterans' benefits. Here's what to know, plus potential workarounds to avoid economic crisis. |

A little pick-me-up before you go. |
An Oklahoma kindergartner received the best graduation gift he could've asked for when his military father surprised him at the ceremony. Kael Cook cried happy tears when his dad, Kelby Cook, a medevac Blackhawk helicopter pilot in the National Guard, showed up at his graduation. Kelby, who has been stationed in the Middle East, coordinated the surprise with Kael's school, hiding in the back of the gym until Kael's teacher paid tribute to the boy's bravery this year. Kelby also surprised his wife, Lexi, who was in "complete shock" while taking a video of Kael's graduation. "It was exciting and overwhelming," Kelby told us. See more photos and video of the moment here. |
