Huu Can Tran, 72, the suspect in a shooting attack in Monterey Park on Saturday night that left 10 dead and 10 others injured, was identified yesterday after having appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. The motive for the shooting is not clear, the L.A. County sheriff said yesterday. A person in a white van who was stopped by police about 30 miles from the shooting fit the description of the person seen at the crime scenes in Monterey Park and nearby Alhambra, sources told NBC News. SWAT officers breached the van and found the individual dead, police said. The shooting occurred as people in the majority Asian American cities were celebrating Lunar New Year on Saturday night. Here's the latest. |

The only child of Priscilla Presley and Elvis Presley was laid to rest in a ceremony at the family's estate in Tennessee yesterday after her death at 54 of sudden cardiac arrest on Jan. 12. Priscilla shared a tribute written by one of Lisa Marie's daughters that called her "a role model, a superhero to many people all over the world." Priscilla also shared a poem by one of her granddaughters, and the husband of Lisa Marie's oldest daughter, actor Riley Keough, read a letter she wrote for her mother. Priscilla then delivered her own tribute, which she ended by saying "our heart is broken." Alanis Morissette and Axl Rose also performed songs in Lisa Marie's memory. See all the remembrances here. |

Enjoy the final few weeks of football season leading up to the Super Bowl with a pair of tailgate sandwiches from chef and restaurateur Josh Capon. His Cuban sandwich (above) is a taste of Miami bursting with flavor from pork shoulder topped with pickles and mustard. If you're looking for more of a New Orleans style, try Josh's muffuletta sandwich. Make sure to get plenty of olive spread and vinaigrette on the bread so it soaks up the flavor before adding the deli meats, fresh mozzarella and provolone. Get the recipes here. |

Christmas is over, but a little girl's investigation into whether Santa is real is not. Scarlett Doumato, 10, enlisted the help of Rhode Island's Cumberland Police Department by writing them a letter and sharing some key evidence she gathered on Dec. 25. "I took a sample of a cookie and carrots that I left for Santa and the raindeer on Christmas Eve and was wondering if you could take a sample of DNA and see if Santa is real?" she wrote in the letter. The department has now opened a "special investigation" after receiving plastic bags with two baby carrots and a partially eaten Oreo cookie. "I just hope that it makes everybody think back to when they were a little kid, and that wonder and curiosity," the Cumberland police chief said. "Anything we can do to foster that for her and make this really special, I'm willing to." |
