Actor Anne Heche died at 53 after being removed from life support yesterday, nine days after a fiery one-car crash into a home in Los Angeles, her spokesperson said. Heche had been declared brain-dead on Friday and had remained on life support after suffering an anoxic brain injury. She was known for her roles in "Donnie Brasco," "Volcano" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer." "We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend," her family said. |

Salman Rushdie's agent said yesterday the author is "on the road to recovery" after suffering serious injuries when he was attacked at a lecture in upstate New York. Rushdie, 75, was removed from a ventilator on Saturday and able to talk after the stabbing attack left him with a damaged liver, severed nerves in his arm, and serious injuries to one eye. A 24-year-old New Jersey man pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges in what a prosecutor called "a targeted, unprovoked, preplanned attack". "The Satanic Verses" author has weathered death threats and a bounty on his head for more than three decades. |

The mother of an Indianapolis teen is speaking out after a hospital took her 17-year-old daughter off a ventilator while the family was desperately trying to find another facility to take her. Treasure Perry suffered a severe allergy and asthma attack and was pronounced brain dead days later, but her family believed she was still alive, and they were trying to find another hospital for her. A judge's ruling led Treasure to be taken off a ventilator, and now the case is drawing intense scrutiny. "We never gave up on her — the doctors failed her and us," Treasure's aunt said. |

Wedding officiant Randy Latini sent a message of love to more than the bride and the groom when he used American Sign Language in a recent ceremony captured on Instagram. One of the flower girls, 1-year-old Riley, was born deaf. Her mother, Christina Pacala, was a bridesmaid who became emotional after seeing how Latini included Riley during the nuptials. "I started sobbing so hard when I realized he wasn't just moving his hands — he was signing the word 'family,'" Pacala told us. "It was Randy's way of saying, 'Riley is a member of our family and she uses sign language to communicate, so we will too.'" Watch the moment here. |
