The person at the table who gets a dish with a flaw or chip may make a wish when taking the first bite of food. (Switching dishes so you will get the 'wish dish' invalidates your wish.)
If you are served a beverage in a cup or mug with a manufacturing flaw (a burr, off-center border or design, etc.), you should take your first three swallows from the reverse side of the cup, holding it with your left hand, and make a wish.
Another wishing custom regarding a flawed dish, mug, or cup is that the person receiving it must stroke the flaw three times while making his or her wish.
If there is one piece of cutlery from a set that has a manufacturing flaw (offset design, burr, etc.), the set should be placed in a large mug so the flawed portion is hidden; the person who draws the 'lucky spoon' (or knife or fork) should tap it on the table three times while making a wish.
If you accidentally drop a knife, fork, or spoon, make a wish before you pick it up.
