Newborn babies and other patients at Gaza's largest hospital are dying after days without power and other resources, Palestinian Health Ministry officials said yesterday. Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City is no longer "functioning as a hospital," and the situation is "dire and perilous," a World Health Organization official said this morning. Heavy bombardment by Israel and intense fighting outside the complex has caused power outages amid a fuel shortage, according to the ministry. A surgeon at the hospital told NBC News that at least 36 premature babies are at risk of dying due to the conditions. The Israel Defense Forces announced yesterday that it would open evacuation routes from Al-Shifa and two other hospitals in Gaza City. Here's the latest. |
