Russia's defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, appeared in public today for the first time since this weekend's dramatic armed rebellion that sought to oust him from power. Shoigu was shown on a video visiting troops involved in the war with Ukraine after a short-lived revolt that developed into the biggest challenge to President Vladimir Putin in more than 20 years of rule. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of the Wagner mercenary group, seized a key Russian city and his troops made it within 120 miles of Moscow before turning back after Putin's regime struck a deal to exile Prigozhin to Belarus. Prigozhin blamed Shoigu and other leaders for botching the war, and announced Friday that his troops would be leaving Ukraine to return home and effectively try to depose the defense minister. Here's the latest. |

As the U.S. Coast Guard opens an investigation into what officials called a "catastrophic implosion" of the Titan submersible last week, experts have analyzed the colossal forces involved in the disaster that killed five men. The deep-sea water pressure that appears to have crushed the 22-foot craft would have been roughly equivalent in weight to the 10,000-ton Eiffel Tower, experts told NBC News. "They would have known nothing — the minute this body of water hit them, they would have been dead," one expert said. Officials don't know exactly where or why the tourist sub imploded, and one expert said there are "substantial challenges" to recovering the bodies of the passengers. Read more here. |

Sheri Shaw and her husband, Bill James, had plenty of experience with the "in sickness and in health" part of their vows well before they tied the knot. They had been dating for a year when Shaw, 70, was diagnosed with cancer in 2020, and she tried to break up with James because she figured her entire life was about to be wrapped up in treatment. Instead, he stayed by her side, and their bond only strengthened. It led to the moment when they were married on June 11 at a ceremony in North Carolina. "If there's any sickness that comes up, we know we can handle it," Shaw told us. She purposefully had her oncologist and radiologist walk her down the aisle. "It was a no brainer. I had to have them here," she told us. "I wanted them to celebrate and see what they actually did for me in real time." Read the full story here. |

A canine named Scooter took home first place in the World's Ugliest Dog contest over the weekend and stole the judges' hearts in the process. While the 7-year-old hairless Chinese Crested pup has backwards feet after being born with deformed legs, his spirit won over judges like NBC News correspondent Gadi Schwartz at this year's contest in California. "From the second he sits his hairless little booty and backward legs on your lap, you feel his warm, huggable power to change the meaning of the word ugly!" Schwartz told us. The contest, held annually for nearly 50 years, is meant to showcase the importance of adoption. After Scooter was born, the breeder turned him in to animal control for euthanasia, but he was saved by a rescue group that includes his owner, Linda Celeste Elmquist. See more photos of Scooter here. |
