The Missouri man who shot a teenager who rang the wrong doorbell while trying to pick up his younger brothers was charged with two felony counts yesterday, officials said. Andrew Lester, a white man in his 80s, has been charged with assault in the first degree and armed criminal action in the April 13 shooting of Ralph Yarl, 16. Lester, who is not yet in custody, allegedly opened fire with a .32 revolver, striking Yarl in the head and once in the arm. Yarl was shot after his parents asked him to pick up his 11-year-old twin brothers and he mistakenly went to the wrong home in Kansas City, police said. Yarl was released from the hospital Saturday and is recovering at home, his family said. A former teacher described the boy as a gifted student and a "gentle soul." A neighbor who ran out of his house to help the wounded teen told NBC News, "He didn't deserve to get shot." Here's the latest. |

In 2020, Katie Drablos had a canker sore on the back of her tongue that wouldn't go away, leading her to think it was a symptom of COVID-19. She had a hard time seeing the sore, but felt pain when she ate. It turned out to be stage 4 tongue cancer, which led to chemotherapy, radiation and doctors removing a lesion from her tongue. They had to reconstruct her tongue using grafts from her left arm and leg. The diagnosis was stunning because, for decades, tongue cancer patients were mostly men over 60 who smoked and drank heavily. "We've started to see anecdotally in the last 10 years ... a shift to a younger age group, I mean below the age of 40, unrelated to previous drinking and smoking history," her doctor told TODAY.com. See Katie's journey and learn about the symptoms of tongue cancer. |

A tweet by Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Anthony Bass has fired up a discussion about who should be responsible for picking up a mess made by young children on an airplane: parents or the flight crew? Bass complained that flight attendants made his pregnant wife get on her hands and knees to clean up popcorn left on the floor by their 2-year-old daughter. That sparked a host of positive and negative responses. We spoke with etiquette expert and former flight attendant Jacqueline Whitmore, who said a flight attendant asking parents to get on the ground to clean up is "unprofessional." "This is something that the flight attendant or the cleaning crew could have easily handled without making a fuss," she said. When it comes to kids and plane etiquette, we also have tips about whether it's OK for families to ask people to switch seats so everyone can sit together. |

It's one of those mindless parts of doing the laundry: you toss a dryer sheet in with the clothes to help them smell better. However, it actually may be doing more harm than good to not only your clothes, but also your dryer. Shop TODAY spoke with four cleaning experts who said dryer sheets can have the same negative effects as fabric softener — coating your clothes with a waxy substance and damaging the dryer over time by glazing over the sensors. It also can affect your drying time since the wax can cover the lint screen and you won't be able to tell, one expert said. We have 5 alternatives to dryer sheets that you can shop right now, as well as tips on how to use dryer sheets safely. |

A little pick-me-up before you go. |
That's Miss Jones, if you're nasty. TODAY's own Sheinelle Jones had one for the bucket list this weekend when she performed as a backup dancer with her childhood idol, Janet Jackson. The "Control" singer invited Sheinelle to join her onstage back in December — Sheinelle famously crushed it as Janet during our 2019 Halloween show — and the big moment finally came on Sunday during Janet's show at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida. With only a few hours to prepare, Sheinelle appeared during the encore, "Together Again," off 1997's "The Velvet Rope." And, once again, she proved herself a worthy first lady of the Rhythm Nation. "If this is a dream, please just don't wake me," Sheinelle said. See the full video here. |
