Millions of Americans are born genetically predisposed to extremely high levels of a type of cholesterol called lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), which can cause deadly heart attacks and strokes by middle age. As many as 64 million Americans have elevated Lp(a) levels, but most people are unaware that they are at risk. Unlike the "bad" cholesterol known as LDL, it's entirely genetic, so diet and exercise have no effect on Lp(a) levels.
