It's natural to want to shield children from news about the Israel-Hamas war, but the reality is children may hear about it from friends or see graphic images on social media. Parenting expert Dr. Deborah Gilboa shared tips with TODAY.com about how to talk to children of all ages about the war, starting with parents processing their own feelings about it first. "A conversation with your child about a big, scary, somewhat incomprehensible topic is not the right place to work out your emotions," Gilboa said. She shared tips on how to talk to children from preschool to age 8, ages 8-10, middle school and high school students. The culinary world mourned the loss of acclaimed chef and former Food Network star Michael Chiarello, who died at 61 after receiving treatment for an acute allergic reaction that led to anaphylactic shock, his company said. Chiarello was a regular in the TODAY kitchen over the years, an owner of an acclaimed restaurant in Napa Valley in the 1980s, and a staple on the Food Network. Who needs a calculator when you can just ask "Nathan the Number Kid"? Nathan Katcher is a 6-year-old math whiz whose ability to solve complex equations in his head has dazzled TikTok. One of his videos shows him successfully calculating a lengthy equation that includes multiplication, addition, subtraction, division and a square root. It's not just math skills, either, as Nathan has taught himself how to play piano using an app and memorized the flag designs of 65 different countries.
