With no sign of a short-term funding deal between the Republican-led House and Democratic-controlled Senate, Congress is hurtling toward a government shutdown that is set to begin on Sunday. Speaker Kevin McCarthy said yesterday that he plans to bring a short-term funding bill to the floor today, ahead of the 11:59 p.m. Saturday deadline. However, the bill is not expected to be approved by the Senate if it even passes the House, where a group of far-right members have been opposed to any kind of continuing resolution.
