After weight gain from grief, 1 woman has hit a 150-day walking streak and lost 25 pounds |
Jennifer Koji, 41, is a mom of four. Like many women, she struggled to lose the weight after pregnancy and held on to an additional 40 pounds after having her children. But when she lost her father, she really put her health on the back burner. By January 2023, she weighed 215 pounds and felt sluggish and tired all day. The 1-year anniversary of her dad's death wan an "ah-ha" moment for Koji. She decided to turn her grief into motivation and joined the Start TODAY walking program. In addition to walking, she began practicing portion control to cut back without giving up the foods she loves. "One night a week, we do 'eat what you like night,' ... something a little more fatty," she told TODAY. Some other ways she practices portion control: - She sticks to 2-3 pieces of pizza instead of a whole pie, and adds chicken and broccoli as toppings.
- Her job at a café and bakery makes committing to a healthier diet even more challenging. "Every Thursday, we make jumbo cupcakes, and I bring one home and that's my sweet for the week," she said.
- She also allows herself the ice cream she loves from her favorite place in town, but enjoys it once a month instead of twice a week.
