| Today's workout is a walk — we're on day 8 of our walking streak!
If you've been walking for awhile and are ready to pick up the pace a bit, introducing running can be a great next challenge. But, experts say, it's important to remember that running is a sport. And just like any sport, you need to take the time to progress.
After establishing a fitness walking routine, the next step is to ease into a walk-run routine using the "rule of two": 2 minutes of running followed by 2 minutes of walking, 6-7 times, for about 30 minutes, says physical therapist Chris Johnson. When that starts to feel easy, dial up the ratio to 3 minutes of running and 1 minute of walking. Then, increase your running to 4 minutes followed by 1 minute of walking. "You're just gently nudging in," says Johnson. "You're allowing the body time to adapt." Get 7 more running tips for beginners here. |

This common habit could be harming your eye health |
Sometimes, there's nothing more relieving than a good eye rub — but it should not become a habit.
"Eye rubbing is very, very common and we often do it without even thinking about it," says Dr. Bennie Jeng, chair of ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute at Penn Medicine. However, excessive or continuous eye rubbing can cause irreversible damage and increase the risk of infection from bacteria on your hands, experts say.
Eye rubbing has also been associated with a condition called keratoconus, Jeng says, which occurs when the cornea becomes thin and misshapen and can lead to blurred vision or light sensitivity. 4 other common habits that could be hurting your eyes. |
