NASA shared yesterday that its mission to change an asteroid's orbit by intentionally smashing a spacecraft into it last month was a success. Data obtained over the last two weeks showed that the collision with Dimorphos, an asteroid more than 6.5 million miles from Earth, shortened its orbit of a larger asteroid by 32 minutes. The mission was the first real-life test of humanity's ability to protect Earth from potentially catastrophic asteroids. A NASA official called it "a watershed moment for planetary defense and all of humanity." |

Angela Lansbury, a legendary star of television, movies and Broadway best known for her role as amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher on the CBS hit "Murder, She Wrote," died at 96 at her home in Los Angeles yesterday, her family said. Lansbury earned 18 Emmy nominations in her career and was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1996. She also appeared in dozens of films and earned three Oscar nominations, including one for the 1944 classic "Gaslight." Lansbury was also a celebrated Broadway performer, winning five Tony Awards, most recently in 2009 for "Blithe Spirit," when she was 83. In 2014, the late Queen Elizabeth II bestowed on her the prestigious DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire) honor. |

A bombshell new study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that getting a colonoscopy has little impact on the risk of death for colon cancer, leading to questions about a procedure recommended for everyone 45 and over. Researchers found the risk of death from colon cancer was .28% in the colonoscopy group versus .31% in the control group, which did not receive colonoscopies. So, should you still get a colonoscopy? "My advice to the public is to get some type of colon cancer screening, whether it's a stool test or a colonoscopy, starting at age 45," said Dr. Otis Brawley, a cancer screening expert at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore. See what else experts had to say about the study here. |

We see dead people ... playing Twister. Halloween is not a one-day celebration for this San Antonio family, to the delight of their neighbors. Steven and Danielle Dinote and their teen children are the owners of a home nicknamed "The Skeleton House" because they decorate their yard with a different skeleton-themed scene for every day of October leading up to Halloween. They've had a cannon battle between skeletons, a scene from "Hamlet," a Twister game (above), a Hawaiian luau and more. See photos of their bone-derful creations here. |
