For more than 50 years, an empty chair sat in the center of teacher Dan Gill's classroom at a middle school in New Jersey. It's a symbolic reminder of a racial discrimination incident that has stuck with him for 66 years. When Gill was 9, he and a friend named Archie, who was Black, went to a kid's birthday party in their New York City apartment building. But Archie was told by the child's mother that he couldn't come in because there were no more chairs. Gill, 75, now uses the empty chair as a teaching tool during his lessons about the civil rights movement. "I hope it imparts to kids how they can be better and how they can treat people better," he told us. "I hope they will be decision-makers in their own class." |
