A volcanic eruption lit up the sky in Iceland last night, sending a river of lava toward surrounding towns. Police declared a state of emergency and tourist spots were closed across the Reykjanes peninsula in the southwest part of the island. More than 3,400 people in a nearby fishing village were evacuated in November after it was hit by a series of earthquakes and large plumes of steam began spewing from the roads. The eruption could last as long as 10 days, the country's meteorological office said. Here's the latest. |

We're approaching peak respiratory virus season with the winter in full swing, and a new COVID-19 variant known as JN.1 has been sweeping across the country in recent weeks. It was first detected in September and now accounts for about 30% of new cases, according to the CDC. Symptoms appear to be similar to other Covid infections and include sore throat, cough, fatigue, headache, lost of taste or smell, and more. Testing is an important tool to protect yourself and others from COVID-19, especially ahead of holiday gatherings, doctors say. The new, updated COVID-19 vaccines are expected to increase protection against JN.1, as well as other variants, the CDC said. Here's what to know. |

A little pick-me-up before you go. |
While the Elf on the Shelf is busy watching the kids ahead of Christmas, apparently somebody needs to be busy watching the person in charge of the elf. Erisa Laska, a mom of four from Las Vegas, removed her husband from Elf on the Shelf duty recently when she found the steamy setup he created for the elf. "He's no longer in charge," she hilariously captioned an Instagram video of the spicy scene in the bathroom sink. Hopefully the elf didn't report it to Santa. See the moment here. |
