The contest among Republicans to become the next speaker of the House dramatically widened over the weekend as nine candidates are now vying to win the vote, House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik said yesterday. A GOP candidate forum is set for 6:30 p.m. ET today, which will be followed by an internal conference vote tomorrow morning. Interim Speaker Patrick McHenry said his intention is to move to a floor vote "as soon as Tuesday." This comes as Rep. Jim Jordan's speakership bid fell apart after his defeat on the House floor for a third time last week. The House has now been without a speaker for 19 days, the longest stretch since an 18-day void in 1971.
