Following a three-day manhunt, Baltimore police arrested the man suspected of killing 26-year-old tech CEO Pava LaPere, a U.S. Marshal confirmed to NBC affiliate WBAL early this morning. Suspect Jason Billingsley, 32, was apprehended at a train station in Bowie, Maryland, the U.S. Marshal said. Billingsley, who was also wanted in connection with an unrelated attempted murder, arson and rape earlier this month, had been wanted on a first-degree murder warrant in the killing of LaPere, the CEO and founder of the startup EcoMap Technologies. Billingsley is a "repeat violent offender," Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan J. Bates said at a news conference. Authorities haven't identified any connection between LaPere and Billingsley. Here's the latest. |

A government shutdown will begin on 12:01 a.m. Sunday if Congress doesn't act, which is looking increasingly likely after little public progress yesterday. If the government shuts down, 4 million government employees would go without a paycheck, and hundreds of thousands could be furloughed, meaning they will be told to stay home indefinitely without pay. Social Security checks will continue to go out, while national parks are at the risk of being closed or not staffed. TSA employees are considered essential and have to work through a shutdown, but there could be more delays at airports and in processing passport applications. Home loans through federal programs could also be delayed, and the estimated 33 million small businesses that rely on federal services could be affected. Read more. |

Back in 2018, Laura Hendricks took her three young children to the pediatrician because they were sick. But the doctor who saw them also became concerned about Hendricks' health. The pediatrician saw something off with her coloring and examined her hands. She then recommended that Hendricks get bloodwork done, and it turned out she had an aggressive form of leukemia known as acute myeloid leukemia. "The whole world changed," said Hendricks, who hadn't been feeling well but thought it was a cold. The Chicago area mom was admitted to the hospital in 2018 and underwent intense chemotherapy. Learn more about her journey and the self-care kits she created to help others with cancer. |

A little pick-me-up before you go. |
There are less than 500 of this subspecies of Siberian tiger left in the world, but it's hard to imagine there are two more adorable ones than these twins. The rare female Amur cubs were born at Ohio's Toledo Zoo and are doing "absolutely great," according to the zoo, except for one thing: They still need names. The zoo has eight names that are in the running and is asking for the public's help to make the final selections. Get your vote in here. |
